1. Light Requirements

  • Bright, Indirect Light: This plant thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, too much direct sun can scorch its colorful leaves, causing them to turn brown or lose their vibrancy.
  • If you don't have access to bright light, artificial grow lights can be a good option.

2. Temperature

  • Warm Temperatures: Cordyline 'Purple Compacta' prefers temperatures between 18°C to 24°C (65°F to 75°F).
  • It should be kept away from drafts or cold temperatures, as it is sensitive to temperatures below 10°C (50°F).

3. Humidity

  • Moderate to High Humidity: Being a tropical plant, Cordyline thrives in moderate to high humidity. In the UK, the indoor air tends to be relatively dry, especially in the winter due to heating, so you may need to:
    • Use a humidifier near the plant.
    • Group plants together to create a microenvironment with higher humidity.
    • Place the pot on a humidifying tray with water and pebbles.

4. Watering

  • Watering Needs: Water the plant when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Be careful not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot.
  • Water Quality: If possible, use rainwater or distilled water, as Cordyline can be sensitive to chemicals like chlorine and fluoride present in tap water.
  • Good Drainage: Ensure the pot has good drainage, and never let the plant sit in water.
